It’s a fair sign that I’ve had a good weekend when I’m so tired on a Sunday evening that I don’t have the energy to post about it. Consequently, here I am on Monday to tell you about the previous weekend.

The End of a Bad Week
Last week ended badly. The troubles at work seemed to linger on and I am faced with the prospect of leaving quietly or digging in my heels for a fight. The considerations and worries about this haunted my drive home and weighed heavily on my thoughts. Mendi did her best to shake me out of things, but we were both exhausted form the previous week and just spent the evening watching TV and giving each other quiet support.

Things Get Better
I slept badly, but still woke up at 6am and could not doze off again. Instead I got up and spodded for a while before starting on the usual chores. Mendi and I took Maggie for her walk across beautiful frosty fields – bliss! Pixie came over during the morning and we went to Melton to do the weekly shop and to collect Alexi from a sleepover. He was more than happy to stay in the car whilst Pixie and I shopped – his copy of Games Workshop’s Magazine White Dwarf had arrived and he was engrossed. We came back from Melton via Northfied Farm to buy a huge joint of Tamworth Pork, pausing only to ooh and aar at a new calf who was bouncing around it’s pen. He is a West Park and is all white with black ears and nose and unfeasibly cute. This year all the calves will be named with names beginning with the letter "I" and so we realised we were looking at Ivan the Terri-bull (blame Mendi!). We got back home and I made a huge pot of bacon, leek and potato soup whilst Pixie and Mendi carried on with the house cleaning until our friends arrived.

…and better still
[profile] kissycat1000 and crew ([personal profile] azekeil, [personal profile] ev1ldonut and Little Miss T) had driven up from Cheltenham. It was great to see them all and to meet [personal profile] ev1ldonut for the first time. Little Miss T was particularly pleased to meet Maggie and our cats Meg and Silver. I suggested that we all take Maggie for a walk in the village, but retail therapy was calling and 7 of us bundled into the big car and went into Melton. This involved our friendly neighbourhood itchy-witchy, new-agey gothey shoppe (Far Fetched) getting well and truly Kissycatted! Alexi and Little Miss T were fascinated by a treasure chest full of polished stones and happily spent what seemed like hours filling a box with just the right stones. By the time we got back home the fire was lit and our guests colapsed in front of it whilst was sous-chef to Mendi in the kitchen.

Mendi rarely does the cooking when we entertain, but kindly decided to give me a break and turned out a fabulous dinner of roast pork with all the trimmings. What an babyliscious babe she is! We were all up to the task of eating a fine meal and descended on it like locusts. We were all so full that we just had to retire to the fireside and create a large people-puddle where we remained until it was time to go to bed. Lots of hugs, snuggles and cuddles were had by all and I decided that I liked snogging people with tongue-bars. Azekeil plugged his laptop into our pitiful speakers (replacement is on my wish list) and proceeded to play loads of Dead Can Dance to us. Pixie was amazed when I liked it because I have an oft-stated aversion to “that maudlin goth rubbish!” I am prepared to admit that I was totally incorrect in my initial assessment – I really enjoyed it and it was perfect for a chilled out evening. Very relaxing and just what I needed to help me forget work.

The Morning After…
This lack of sleep is becoming tedious! I woke at 6am again and could not spod because Little Miss T was sleeping in there. Instead I tried unsuccessfully to doze off. Mendi soon woke and was plaintively asking for what she normally needs in the morning – breakfast in bed. I padded downstairs as quietly as possible and foraged in the kitchen. We’d scoffed it all by 7am and went back to sleep until the far more civilised hour of 8.30. By this time the rest of the house was slowly starting to stir. Pixie and I left them to it and walked Maggie in the frosty morning light. We returned to find a toast marathon in progress with Mendi supervising a production line of [personal profile] ev1ldonut driving the toaster, [profile] kissycat1000 spreading well and [personal profile] azekeil being a teasmaid – how civilised. I helped myself to a suitably hobbity second breakfast and then [personal profile] azekeil set to on my PC.

It didn’t take the uber-geek long to work out that my network wasn’t working because the network cable was knackered – grrr. That was soon fixed, but the new cable I had bought the previous day was too short and so a permanent installation will have to wait until I go to the shops again. We also had great fun arguing with talking to AOL Support. Apparently, AOL no longer lets you connect a second PC to the internet over a dial-up connection. Somehow they have inhibited the network settings. Unsurprisingly, they had a solution to offer. Just upgrade to AOL Broadband! Don’t you just love AOL? The most annoying thing about it is that we will probably stick with AOL when Broadband comes to our exchange in February (Yay!) because so many people know us by our AOL e-mail addresses – sigh! Any good suggestions of a way forward out there?

The Rest of the Weekend
We were sorry to see our guests leave at midday and pretty much slumped after that. Mendi went out to see a new friend that Pixie new and brought him back for lunch and to say hi to Pixie. After that I don’t think we did pretty much apart from sleep, walk Maggie, sit by the fire and generally try to relax. Mendi and I went to bed early and I went straight to sleep. Only to wake up at 01.00 and again at 04.00 and spend far too much time worrying about the work situation. However, a few hours of wakefulness and worry were insufficient to mar a lovely weekend.
