It's just a little prick
Jan. 21st, 2003 04:36 pmI've been to see my doctor today and ended up feeling like I'd been well and truly leeched. I felt so rotten yesterday that I listened to the gentle persuasion that was given to me by
the_mendicant and
gardenpixie and took myself to see my friendly Doctor. I casually described my symptoms of:
Aches
Dizziness
Tiredness
Feeling low
Sore throat
Diaorhea for 6 days
Dry cough
Spiking temperature
I was expecting to be dismissed with a cry of, "WTF are you doing bothering me with just another virus when you know I can't do anything about them!" when I saw him scrabbling for rubber gloves, sringes and blood test forms. I couldn't think what was amiss until he muttered...."I've never lost a patient with malaria!" Then the penny dropped...duh! Someone has just got back from 2 trips to a country surrounded by countries where malaria is endemic.
6 blood tests later I was let loose feeling far worse than I had been when I went into the surgery and with something new to worry about. I've got to go back in the morning when my temperature spikes again for a "blood film" (Is that some sort of horror movie?). On the plus side, my doc reckons that there is an 80% chance that I have probably just picked up a mundane virus and that the other symptoms are explained by stress and tiredness.
Meanwhile, I can look forward to the prospect of calling my boss and explaining what may have happened - that'll be fun >:@)
When should I plan to return to work?
