Last night we piled out to the Melton Flea Pit to see Calendar Girls. [profile] the_mendicant and I were gobsmacked when both Alexi and Ivan announced that they wanted to see the film; we’d assumed that they wouldn’t be at all interested. However, they came along and by their roars of laughter I guess they enjoyed themselves.

It was a very enjoyable film and should pick up its fair share of awards. The cast was superb and the whole film left me with a cosy feeling. However, I was struck by the thought that the Real Calendar Girls raised over £500,000 for Leukaemia Research, but I was watching a film that must have cost well over £10,000,000 to make and market and will probably gross 5 times that. Does anyone know if the profits will purely go back to the Shareholders or if cancer charities will benefit as well? I was also disappointed that no collection was made as we were leaving the cinema – a missed opportunity.

Some of you will know that I’m a long time player and organiser of Role-Playing Games (RPGs)*. What less of you will know is that for some time I’ve not been able to do much gaming. There isn’t a viable group in my area and I’ve never been able to persuade enough of the Unusual Suspects to give it a go (Although, I never stop trying and would love to host an RPG party for you lot – Call of Cthulhu anyone?). However, I may have found a way of getting my “fix.” I’ve joined a Play By e-Mail (PBeM) Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play campaign set in Games Workshop’s suberb Old World setting.

We’ve only just started but, so far, I’m enjoying myself and looking forward to seeing how much trouble my character can cause. Viktor Sloeberry is an angry halfling gamekeeper who has recently lost his job after his Lord fell out of favour at court. Nobles are definitely not flavour of the month with young Viktor and I’m delighted to find out that there is a young effete noble in amongst the other Player Characters – tee hee! *rubs hands together in delight*
