Sad and happy (one out and one in)
Jan. 25th, 2006 08:38 pmNot part of the seven dwarves, but a Northfield Farm post.
I'm sorry to say that one of the piglets who got trampled and then stitched up did not make it. She died in the night and I found her when I was checking up on them all this morning. I suspect that she died as a result of her initial injuries, but I could find no signs of infection. Alternatively, she did seem to have developed the habit of really digging herself into her bedding when settling down and she was almost buried when I found her this morning so its possible that she got smothered. We'll never know. A shame, but her siblings and the other litter appear to be doing fine. Well, apart from Hoppy - whom I'm considering renaming to Draggy because he's making so little effort to get about. He's gaining wieght along with his siblings so he's managing to get himslf to the Milkbar whenever his mum lies down; he just won't make any effort at other times - I'll have to weld his back end to a roller-skate!
The happy news? As I was checking the stock before leaving I found a newly born calf in the barn. I've no idea what sex it is as it was still soaking wet and mum was just beginning to lick it clean. I shall find out in the morning and let you lot know if we need a boy's of girl's name beginning with the letter "K"
