Down on the farm
Mar. 25th, 2006 10:34 amI'm looking after the farm this weekend whilst the master is off carousing it up in Dublin. It means long hours a nd lots of responsibility, but I really enjoy it.
Yesterday I finished my normal working day at about 16:30, but had to come back here for an hour in the middle of the evening to check that all the livestock were Ok and to bottle feed the 4 "pet" lambs. I then had to return after 23:00 to do a final check around the place and give the lambs one last feed.
I was back in again this morning by 07:30 and so far I have:
Said good morning to Alan the butcher who was busy trying to work out how the new credit card machine works in the Farm Shop
Fed the dogs
Mixed up milk substitute for the lambs
Fed the lambs
Fed the ewes and other lambs in the barn and checked them all
Fed the pigshttp://www.livejournal.com/update.bml
Fed the piglets and re-filled their water trough
Used the fork attachment on the tractor to feed silage to 57 cattle and 20 sheep
Moved big bales of straw to bed down the cattle
Rounded up the calves who always escape from the barn when I'm feeding and bedding down
Re-filled the pigs' water buckets
Walked around the 70 or so sheep and 40 lambs in the field to check on them
Walked around the 20 tups (young rams) and checked them - Lewis is fine
Chatted to some customers and got an order fortwo whole legs of mutton
Fed the lambs again - schmoozed some more customers by letting their children feed the lambs
I'll do one more check round before I head home, but I'll be back in the middle of the afternoon to check up on everything once more.
