God, I remember being thrown in at the deep end with my first supervisory role, and it's very hard to know what the balance is between being in control and being a bossy cow. Whitbread used to do a brilliant in-house training book called "Supervising and Managing People at Work" that really helped, but I no longer have it (think I passed it on to someone else in a similar situation).
