Cool! Thunderbird for email. Don't forget virus scanners (e.g. AVG at http://www.grisoft.com) and spyware/adware snoops (Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, winpatrol etc.).
Picasa (on google) is a pretty cool app for storing/archiving/basic editing of photos.
Semagic for updating LJ.
Anything else depends on what you actually want to do.
Also, it's a good idea to create two accounts, an admin account (through which you install all your software) and a user account (for working) which makes recovery in worst case scenarios easier.
