It lives!

I got my laptop back today with a Hay-uge 60Gb Hard disk to replace the old one that could only manage to go CLUNK! I've spent the evening busily loading software onto it.

So far I've got the following essentials on there:

Mozilla Firefox
Winamp
MSN
MS Office Pro

What else should I go and find to download and why?

Does anyone have a fairly recent copy of MS-Project I could borrow to install? I want to polish up my skills

Cool!
Thunderbird for email.
Don't forget virus scanners (e.g. AVG at http://www.grisoft.com) and spyware/adware snoops (Search & Destroy, Ad-aware, winpatrol etc.).

Picasa (on google) is a pretty cool app for storing/archiving/basic editing of photos.

Semagic for updating LJ.

Anything else depends on what you actually want to do.

Also, it's a good idea to create two accounts, an admin account (through which you install all your software) and a user account (for working) which makes recovery in worst case scenarios easier.

Aww - beat me to it - I was going to say Picasa - I use ours loads. :-)

DOH - I forgot to mention AVG. I just installed it on a new laptop on Saturday.

AVG was the first thing I put on there!

Downloads.com has some good security stuff, and a keen thumbnail-maker utility.

If you have any interest in Web-related jobs, you might consider taking Dreamweaver for a free test-drive ... or perhaps hanging over at WebMonkey.com for a bit first.

Happy computing!

Have you tried skype?

Spybot SD
Ad-aware
Trillian (for IM)

(and maybe)
Putty for ssh/scp
PFE - or some other text editor
VLC for movies

There is a free MS Project viewer which may be what you need. Maybe.
