No, not a Blackadder reference, but I've just been on a walk down a forgotten lane that is close to our car park and have returned in awe of the power and beauty of Nature in all her glory.

I've talked about the Forgotten Lane before but to the uninitiated its an old road that once linked the villages of Weldon and Gretton in Northamptonshire. Along came the Corby Steelworks with its raping of the countryside and the subsequent post-steelworks sprwl of industrial estates.

Some 20 or so years ago this 1/2 mile stretch of well-paved road got closed off and turned into a footpath. That was when Nature was able to begin to claim it back and she has done this with subtle majesty. The old hedges have grown into tall lines of oak, ash and sycamore trees. The shrubs have tumbled across the roadway in emerald drifts whilst the grasses and smaller plants have forced their inexorable way through the road surface. There is now very little trace of man, abpart from the inevitable rubbish and a narrow strip of road that winds itself sinuously down the route of the old road.

Today I was assaulted by the seemingly inexhaustable shades of green that Nature can tease from chlorophyl. The burst of the yellows, blies and whites of spring flowers has waned, but it is slowly being replaced by the hotter colours of summer:

The pink of clover, ragged robin, dog rose and hawthorn
The purple of thistles and late violets
The red of ash the ash flowers
The white of cow parsley
The yellow of the buttercups and dandelions
The blue of the first cornflower

I love my forgotten lane and walked in there feeling tired and downhearted and walked back up it with a spring in my stride and the energy to face the rest of the day.
