A Day in the Life of...
Oct. 6th, 2005 05:36 pmArrive on farm and swear my greetings at the butchers
Measure out 4 portions of Beef in Beer and blast-freeze them ready for customer orders going out later that morning
Hitch up stock-trailer to rusty Toyota pick-up
Load sheep for slaughter with the lovely Jo and Richard the HT
Check tag numbers of sheep
Feed dogs
Collect sheep paperwork from highly skilled and beautiful Goth farm secretary
Take sheep to abattoir in Melton Mowbray along with the lovely Jo
Successfully reverse trailer in anger for the first time
Pressure wash stock-trailer
Drink a cup of tea, skilfully made by beautiful Goth farm secretary
Shout at small dog who is trying to kill Eric the farm cat!
Grab small dog and give it a bloody good shaking!
Avoid getting bitten by sack of angry wriggling bones, gristle and muscle formerly known as small dog.
Unhitch stock-trailer
Put diesel in Toyota
Feed 2 khune-khune sows
Feed 5 cows and 2 calves in barn
Feed 3 Gloucester old-spot sows and Gloucester old-spot boar in field
Walk around the farm to check all livestock. Have the valuable help of Maggie, Annie and small dog, who seems to have stopped sulking. All the stock seem content.
Place order for more animal food – make sure I order non-GM food.
Took a call from a new customer who’d seen the farm details in the BBC Good Food Guide- sent her our Christmas price list and normal price lists.
Escaped from office
Portioned out the remaining 16 servings of Beef in Beer – saved some for staff lunches!
Got trapped by two reps who were selling chemical fertilizer – it took me nearly half an hour of my life to get rid of them by telling them WE DON’T USE CHEMICALS!!! Grrrr!
Glazed two hams with a honey and mustard glaze
Cooked staff lunches
Washed up lots of messy stuff
Did costings for the cooking I’ve done this week
Drove around stock and filled the creep-feeders for the lambs
Helped the beautiful Goth farm secretary and the lovely Jo to re-stock the cooking trailer for a show over the weekend
Swapped over the gas bottles on the cooking trailer
Re-fuelled the Land Rover
Evicted a Robin from the office - those pesky Robins seem to get everywhere! ;@)
Brief The Master when he got back to the office
Did some more washing up
Came Home
...and relax?
Not likely...I've got the evening meal to make, a house to tidy and I've promised Ivan I'll go to see Batman at his school's movie club...no peace for the wicked!
