A bit of help please. How difficult would it be to turn my laptop inot a dual-boot machine? It currently runs Windows XP, But I have a hankering to play Settlers III again and it just will not run under WinXP under any circumstances. Should I have a go or just go out and build a Win98 machine out of scrap bits? All thoughts and advice will be greatfully received (even if I don't understand it)

Perhaps a new partition on your HD?

Humm could partition your hard drive and put 98 on there but make sure you back up all your current files as paritioning hard drives can end up in u needing to reinstall your system.

It can be done, but it's not easy, and it's risky to the files on your HDD. I wouldn't recommend anyone who hasn't backed up their stuff to give it a go. If you have, then try using Partition Magic 8 to resize your drive. Once you've installed Win98, you'll need to reapply the MBR in XP and set up a boot menu by editing C:\boot.ini on the XP partition to allow you to choose between the OSes.

It all sounds far too much like hard work. I think I'll wait until I move and make a game machine for Win98 stuff

My recommended solution too.

Never mind Settlers (Sim peasants init?), you have something much more amusing to play with. :-D

Have you used the options to tell it to run it as if it's win98? it's in the properties of the exe file somewhere...

I gave it a try like that and it crashed at start-up. I then checked on-line in a number of places and apparently it can not be run under WinXP

Er

It may be that the screen definition is too big, so lower it to 800x600, or something like that. It was the same problem with my American McGee's Alice, it wouldn't work on my XP.
