Day Five and New Year’s Eve

It’s not been the best of days. I had a lousy night’s sleep woke up without a voice, but with a temperature, burning chest and sore throat. I ventured out of my room for some breakfast by the pool, but felt so lousy afterwards that I clambered back under my covers and sought oblivion in dreamland until the early afternoon. When I got up for the second time I though that I had slept through the afternoon because everywhere was dark. No such luck; the rain had arrived again – oh joy. Despite this I decided to go out and do some exploring and shopping in Chinatown.
I’ve had a fairly successful day and have managed to buy up a fair proportion of the Sarong stock of this corner of South East Asia. I even bought something for me – shock horror! However, I new it was time to head back to the hotel when, at one point I couldn’t work out if I was soaked because of the rain working it’s way in from the outside or my sweat pouring out of me. I think I’m going to have a quiet evening and hopefully get a better night’s sleep.
And now for what is probably the most tardy NYE write up on LJ. Unless your in Russia where
cyka assures me that it’s not NYE until Monday night… New Year’s Eve This was the only “sensible” party that Mendi and I had been invited to in our village for months and months. We’d sort of dropped out of our old social circle since we met the “weird” crowd earlier in the year and so we were quite pleased and surprised to be invited. Naturally we accepted and had lots of fun reminding ourselves what would be acceptable topics of conversation at a normal party. Additions to the list I’ve already posted included:
Is that one of Delia’s recipes (‘cos it tastes like over-cooked slops)
I love your dress
Why is she wearing some curtains?
The weather in Singapore was wonderful
Mendi borrowed a lovely black, beaded dress from Pixie, which, together with wrap and long black gloves, made her look every bit the goddess that she is. I struggled into my DJ and wished that the all of the 2 stone I lost earlier in the year had stayed there (where does lost weight go to? Is there some nasty fat-bedecked pocket universe hidden somewhere?). (Note to self: must do better in 2003!)
We left the boys in the tender care of their Grandparents and walked the 100 or so yards to the party – no taxis needed – yippee! We actually had a good time and caught up with a lot of village gossip. Told quite a few people about Live Journals, only to be met with blank or disgusted looks about the idea of reading other people’s diaries. The end of the year passed in a blur of fireworks and champagne and all too soon it was time to head home.
Happy New Year!
Current Book: Havanna Bay - Martin Cruz Smith <--Attack of the Airport novel! It's actually a bloody good read featuring Arkady Renko from Gorky Park
