20 years ago? Had just got my date to report to the RAF College at Cranwell to start my Officer Training. I think I’d also just rammed a muck-fork through my foot whilst working on my Dad’s farm in an effort to get fit. That led to me developing full-blown Hepatitis halfway through my training. I was living at home and having a reasonably good time spending the money I’d earned working as a bar manager for the previous year.

10 years ago? We were living near Mons in Belgium whilst I was working for NATO. My job was going well and gave us plenty of opportunities to see Europe. Mendi was being a full-time mum and military wife and spending far too much time discussing national sexual habits at international coffee mornings! Alexi was 18 months old and into absolutely everything whilst Ivan . However, Evan was a very high probability and due to put in his first appearance in a few weeks time!

5 years ago? Had just completed a year with ST Widgets PLC and had started running their Euro Currency Conversion Project. We were doing lots of work on the house and were involved in lots of stuff in our village (Mendi was out for meetings nearly every night) We had a MAYDAY!!! Party for my birthday where we turned the house and garden into a desert island and encouraged people to dress as they were when the ship went down.

3 years ago? The Euro project was moving on with glacial slowness and I was doing lots of travelling. Life felt OK, but pretty dull.

1 year ago? Life got a lot more interesting! I was weekly commuting to Holland and we had the time and inclination for lots of new diversions ;@)

Yesterday? Work, walked dogs, made tea, felt lousy, did some party planning, spent too much time on LJ.

Tomorrow? Write up some audits, party planning, pick up company car!

I've lived "near Mons in Belgium" to! My Dad worked for SHAPE for donkey's years. He started in the Army and then got a cilvilian job in the late 70s. He's retired now but he still misses the military and having a main-frame to play on! I still kinda think of SHAPE as home. :0)

We lived in Rue de Brocqueroy which was out the back of the base in the countryside.

I was there from late 90 until Feb 94 - when did your Dad retire?

My parents lived in Rue Bertram, in one of those nasty grey bungalows. Still my dad could walk to work every day. I rang up to ask when he retired and it was '93. He couldn't place you, but said you must have been pretty good as SHAPE was quite an elite place to be posted to. Except for the Americans, they just sent any old rubbish! He then became worried that the Secret Services might be bugging the phone and that he might be executed for critisizing the USA! So, if you hear of the mysterious death of an elderly Yorkshireman in Spalding, it'll be him. (Daft as a brush! Good thing he's not passed it on to me!) ;0)

Did you ever play darts at the Officers Club? Nah! Way too cool! ;0)

Of course I played darts in the O CLub - we all did. Watching Merkins trying to throw darts was the highlight of the week

D'uh, what's a Merkin? Oh, Americans! lol! Well, that's you dead too!

Dad was good at darts. Had enough trophies to open a trophy shop! Wonder if you did know him, then. His name's Bill Rhodes.

Hmmm, the name doesn't ring any bells here.

What are your fondest memories of Belgium?
