Frustration
Poor Mendi was almost in tears of frustration on Thursday night and there was nothing I could do to help her. Earlier this week she accepted a freelance typing commission from a friend of a friend to transcribe a manuscript tender document for a house renovation. The piece of work was about 50 pages long and she set to with great gusto. She was cognisant of formats and e-mailed the first two pages to the client to check that he could read them. Apparently they could and so she carried on.
When she’d finished she e-mailed the document, only to get a panicked phone call. The formatting in the document had gone crazy! Apparently, the Muppets had not actually looked at the sample Mendi had sent them – aaargh! Mendi had created the work using MS Word Professional for XP and the client was using an earlier version of Word. Mendi had made extensive use of tables for formatting and the XP version obviously handles tables in a different (and interesting) way.
I hunted for a way of converting them with no success, and Mendi was at her wits’ end. Especially with the prospect of re-formatting a 50 page document. However, she was able to turn on her not inconsiderable charm and persuade her clients that they could amend her draft from a fax version and then sheSupportive
