Here’s my usual ramble about the previous weekend…

Friday
I had to drive down to Oxford for a meeting with our IS Director. He used to be my boss, but the relationship is different now I’m in Audit. I no longer ask “How high?” when he asks me to jump. Now we have civilised meetings and we negotiate for some time and then I’m expected to ask “How high?” The meeting actually went quite well and I’m starting to get a much better feel for what I need to look for when I go out to Japan and Australia in July. The offices were sweltering and so I took the opportunity to finish at a sensible time to go and meet [livejournal.com profile] dotty at Joe’s on the Cowley Road. The two beers I had were desperate for more company but for once, my willpower was strong and I headed home after having a delightful conversation, meal and stroll with Dotty. I left Oxford as the Archers was playing and had one of my quickest journeys back to Rutland – I missed all the Friday traffic and may well decide to stop for a couple of beers before leaving whenever I’m down in Oxford on a Friday.

I got home to find that Mendi had done super-human tidying to sort the mess that had become our house. I just had time for a shower before [personal profile] the_magician arrived. The three of us had a very pleasant evening discussing the merits of music, fine dark chocolate and loads of other things.

Saturday
I had a very busy day and was up quite early to take Alexi and Ivan to have their haircut. Ivan decided to opt for the US Marine/Aliens III look and had a number 3 all over. His mother was not best impressed – but he likes it and I do – we’ll just have to see what his school friends have to say! We did a load of other shopping (weekly grocery shop, shoes for boys etc, etc) and got hotter and hotter as the temperature climbed to extremely comfortable levels. The boys and I got home to find that Mendi had gone into the farm to do some work and so that left me to collect Pixie from home and for the 4 of us to go swimming to Melton Mowbray.

We had a great time and it did me good to get some exercise and release a lot of those muscle kinks that build up. I was also pleasantly surprised that I can still swim a fair distance underwater. We did a few more chores in Melton and then returned to the car to discover that some prat had allowed their child to open their car door into mine and gouge a 2cm dint in the rear door – oh joy! And then I smiled – it’s a company car and I don’t have to worry about it – yippee! I just got the wandering parking warden to take some photos of the damage and paint on the offending car door, took all the necessary details and bimbled off – Yay!

Go home, installed kids in front of video of Die Another Day (Is it worth watching?), drank beers and fell asleep for 45 minutes on the lawn in the gorgeous heat and sunlight – bliss! Mendi got home at about 6ish with a bag of meat from the farm that would have been past its sell-by date by Tuesday. Consequently, I got bullied into making steak with a whisky, cream and peppercorn sauce with home made chips. I did rather well if I say so myself. Pixie, Mendi and I had a quiet evening watching Snow Falling on Cedars – wonderful movie, but inferior to the book or the audio book. Mendi and I retired to bed and Pixie took the Fiat home

Sunday
This was a day when plans were un-made. We had planned to attend a brunch at Bizilizzie’s in aid of Fair Trade, but she’d cancelled. This gave Mendi and I a chance to catch up with a load more chores and so I set to with a full-frontal attack on the ironing pile; whilst Mendi struggled with the accounts. By lunchtime we threw another plan out of the window and decided not to go to the Rutland County Agricultural Show – we just couldn’t be bothered – despite the weather being better for the show than it has been for the past decade! Instead I drove with the boys to see Fleur and her dogs. It seems so long since I’d seen her and it was great to chat and gossip. It was great for Maggie to play with Fleur’s 4 lurchers and for the boys to go and see her Welsh Cob, Captain. We even got a vsit from a 10 week old Tibetan spaniel who was called Sherpa, but should have been called Gizmo – so painfully curte! I bought a lovely bead necklace for Mendi form the range of delightful beadwork that Fleur is doing at the moment

We got home in the middle of the afternoon and I set to to create a BBQ for the Usual Suspects. We had:
Turkey in Tikka Massala Sauce
Northfield Farm Steak in Mustard and Peppercorn
Mergeuz Sausages
Loads of other yummy stuff
I particularly enjoyed cooking some salmon that I had marinaded in Soy sauce, Sake, ginger and chilli oil - yummy scrummy – especially the bits that I just seared on the outside and were raw on the inside – bliss!
[livejournal.com profile] the_magician joined us and was persuaded to get out all of his instruments! Pixie was very impressed and is really looking forward to playing with him again!
All out guests left us by 23.00 and I stumbled into bed feeling a little the worse for too much beer and smoke – bad Dobby!

The Usual Supects for our BBQ were:
Elrond – Fighting a manly battle with a Bodrhan
Bizilizzie – Back from a holiday on the North East coast and waxing lyrical about the place
TGT – Looking as gorgeous as ever
Sandra – Looking stunning in her black underwear!
Christian – (Sandra’s son) looking very curly and not there (he was watching videos with Alexi and Ivan)
Kanga – Being very purple and very cuddly and very kissable!
Pixie – Looking very blue and very lovely and very musical as she placed her lips next to Chris’ instrument!
Daemongirl – Looking sunburnt, frazzled and tired

And the meme that everyone is doing...

I wasn’t aware that I used my brain!

Mel, you possess an interesting balance of hemispheric and sensory characteristics, with a slight right-brain dominance and a slight preference for visual processing.
Since neither of these is completely centered, you lack the indecision and second-guessing associated with other patterns. You have a distinct preference for creativity and intuition with seemingly sufficient verbal skills to be able to translate in any meaningful way to yourself and others.
You tend to see things in "wholes" without surrendering the ability to attend to details. You can give them sufficient notice to be able to utitlize and incorporate them as part of an overall pattern.
In the same way, while you are active and process information simultaneously, you demonstrate a capacity for sequencing as well as reflection which allows for some "inner dialogue."
All in all, you are likely to be quite content with yourself and your style although at times it will not necessarily be appreciated by others. You have sufficient confidence to not second-guess yourself, but rather to use your critical faculties in a way that enhances, rather than limits, your creativity.
You can learn in either mode although far more efficiently within the visual mode. It is likely that in listening to conversations or lecture materials you simultaneously translate into pictures which enhance and elaborate on the meaning.
It is most likely that you will gravitate towards those endeavors which are predominantly visual but include some logic or structuring. You may either work particularly hard at cultivating your auditory skills or risk "missing out" on being able to efficiently process what you learn. Your own intuitive skills will at times interfere with your capacity to listen to others, which is something else you may need to take into account.

I'd love you to cook for me one day...

I'm sure that will happen before the year is out. However, don't expect me to do mcuh if we meet up in the lake district. I'm crap at cooking on poxy little camping gas stoves! Although I suppose I could bring the "baby" Weber BBQ!

I'm thinking about purchasing a portable BBQ I've seen in Iceland - only £20

They can be a great idea, but here is a point to note. Can you carry it when it is still hot? You may not have anywhere to dump hot coals when you are finished.

The Weber looks great, but the handle is too close to the dome-shaped top and you can do a good chop of roasting your hand if you try and move it before it has had a chance to cool down.

The cheapy disposable BBQs are ghreat for most picnic/camping uses.

I know, but if I'm staying over i.e camping, I can leave it to cool over night...

Yes, they're wonderful - especially the circular ones, which, if you perch a wok on top, can do a lovely roast leg of lamb, among other things ...

This - steak with a whisky, cream and peppercorn sauce with home made chips - sounded wonderful, btw. Have had something similar, but with venison and cognac. (Camping, actually.)

I do agree with the statement in the first paragraph: always take advantage of Fridays to have quality "beer"time...And btw dark chocolate is good for mental concentration (as used in France at exams...) ;-)
Now, I had always wondered why I had Distinction in Law and Spanish too, but not anymore...
