I was truly moved when I originally read V For Vendetta in Warrior and I was expecting the worst when I heard the Matrix twins were going to make a movie version. Sadly, I rank the Matrix trilogy as one of the greatest bits of rubbish of all time and a total triumph of style over substance.

Last night I was expecting to be ranting at the screen in disgust. Instead I was captivated and was more than content with their efforts. Yes, there are flaws, and there are plot holes but they made up for it with the restraint shown in not turning a very deep story into an action adventure.

Finch was interpreted extremely well without any attempt to turn him into Morse. However, was I alone in detecting a bit of the Ken Stott's? Stephen Fry had great fun playing himself :@) The one major gripe I have is the casting of the delicious Natalie Portman as Evie Hammond. I found her Commenwealth-hopping accent most disconcerting and couldn't help feeling that she looked far too self-assured in the early scenes of the film where she is working for the BTN. The Evie I remember from the comic is a soul haunted by the loss of her parents. Through everything, she is supposed to be a victim and that didn't come across to me in her performance.

In all, a damn good film. Go see it!
