Monday Night at the Movies

whotheheckamithe_mendicant and I went out together (with each other and with no one else!) last night. We went to Stamford Arts Centre to see The Secretary. We enjoyed a great little movie that won at Sundance last year. It has a strong BDSM theme running through it, but does not descend into exploitation, gawping or titilation. It also has some superb performances from its cast and will certainly make me look out for more work by Steven Shainberg – thoroughly recommended.

Date: 2003-08-05 11:33 am (UTC)I particularly liked the development of Lee's character from pathetic victim through to strong winner whilst remaining in a submissive role. In addition, the "media craze" at Lee's sit down was a beautiful punt at the typical American over-reaction to seemingly trivial events.

Yes this was exactly what I liked too - and why I was slightly irritated at Dougs's assumption it would fail to catch any nuances of BDSM - to me (as an outsider) that seemed an important insight - that "submissive" does not equal "without power or control" and may even mean the opposite.
