Some time ago I posted that I wanted to create a PC that would let me play older games that are utterly incompatible with Windows XP. I will have my filthy hands on that machine in a few weeks and my first step will be to install Windows 98. However, I seem to remember that the disks in that machine use a different file system and I may need to reformat them. Does anyone know if I will need to do that using a DOS format command or would the Windows 98 installation pick that up itself? Can someone remind me of the correct DOS command if it is the former?

if Win98 doesn't recognise the disks' format it'll give you the option to format them itself as part of setup. What I usually do is boot from a DOS floppy and use fdisk to unpartition the disk before installing 98 anyway, so 98 can do its own housekeeping from the start.

not to be a bit late with the suggestions, but have you tried http://dosbox.sourceforge.net ?

At the very worst you can always format the disk with a Windows XP disk - FAT32 is what you're looking for.

Oh, speaking of which, make sure the Windows 98 disk you have is Windows 98 SE - that has FAT32 support and is generally a whole lot more stable than Windows 98.

You have to partition the disk with fdisk and format it with format c:.

OK, if this is the machine I helped copy stuff off on Sunday then

1) Check that K has *all* the files off the C drive on the external hard disk. I dont think I got them all. (I did copy the whole of D though)
2) Copy everything important off the C drive onto the D drive.
3) Unplug the D drive and keep it safe as a backup.
4) Wait a few weeks if you can.

5) Book the machine with win98 CD in the drive - it should hopefully notice and start the install process. You *will* need to reformat it but the install process should be able to cope.

What kind of games is it you're after playing?
There are a lot of good emulators around and programs you can play games through.
I got one called ScummVM to play the old point and click lucasarts games, and it works an absolute treat!
